Assembly in Room 20

On Thursday Room 20 hosted the Year 4 assembly.  Isaac and McNamara did a fantastic job as our MC's.  Well done to Room 20 for singing the Waiata we have been learning over the past week.  Congratulations to our all the fantastic certificate winners for this week.  Keep up the awesome work!!!

Monday lively listeners and super speakers.

This morning the classroom was full of chatter about weekend news.  We were showing we were lively listeners by using eye-contact, nodding and making expressions as we listened.  Mrs Allen was interested in seeing how much of our partners news we could remember.  What a great way to start the new week!

Te Wiki o te Maori - Maori Language Week.

This week is Maori language week.  We have started the term by asking how the person is who comes after ourself on the roll.  Kei te pehea koe?  We are learning different responses depending on our mood in the morning.  We are also learning three songs in Maori and we will perform these to the rest of the Year 4's at our assembly next week.

We were lucky to have some tamariki from Rooms 1 and 2 visit us and teach us some Maori language. They sung the beginning of the national anthem with us and helped us to pronounce the words correctly.  They shared their Mihi and we even wrote our own Mihi.  The children then handed out a colouring competition - due this Friday.  Thanks for the wonderful teaching.

Happy Birthday Jessie

Jessie celebrated her 8th birthday in the holidays.  She was lucky enough to go to New Plymouth and spend some time with her family and grandparents up there.  We loved hearing about your birthday on Monday and are pleased you had such a great day.

Styx Mill Fresh Water Frolicking

Yesterday we went on an amazing trip to the Styx Mill reserve.
We were welcomed by Lou, Ruth and Kenny - the doc rangers.
First we walked along a walkway and learnt about the birds in the area, harakeke (flax) and some other important facts along the way.
We then stopped at the side of the water and began exploring the creatures that live in fresh water.  We were split into groups and used some technical devices to scoop interesting bugs and plants out and then investigated and identified what the water creatures were.  The most common were the water boatmen.  Boy do they swim around!
We then played some cool games and related them back to how we can help keep our waterways/rivers clean.
On the way back we stopped off at Grants Rd to look at how the community has beautified the stream and created fresh water.
Thank you so much to the amazing parent helpers - Lauren, Moreen, Yvonne, Andrea, Angela and Karen.  We couldn't go on these wonderful trips if it wasn't for your support and help.  Thanks!

Water Inquiry

This week Rooms 20, 21 and 22 have started Inquiry projects related to Water.  First each child decided on a topic and then were put into groups of about 4 children who were also interested in the same topic.  We have been brainstorming, gathering and researching information and keywords.  Today we decided who was doing what and how we would present our information.  Some groups have chosen posters, some powerpoints, diaoramas and some groups think they may put the information into a song.  We are working on these as part of our writing and reading programme for the next week.  We will present these at the beginning of Term 3.  It has been fun working with friends from the other classrooms and also finding a space where we feel comfortable working.
